Have You Noticed That Your Yard Is Constantly Water Logged?

What the Different Kinds of Yard Drainage Are

If you have noticed that every time it rains your garden resembles a swimming pool, then you may have a yard drainage problem. The following are a few types of drainage you can use in your garden.

Indications of a drainage issue in a yard will often present themselves after a rainstorm. In a perfect world, excess water will run off a well-drained lawn or garden not long after heavy rain. Typical drainage issues for gardens that are flat range from standing water or soggy soil. When stepped on, should any water pools around your shoes, this is an indication of poor drainage. For yards that have a slope, runoff can also be a problem. Excessive water will eventually cut channels through the soil as it starts to run down, and will often wash away plant life and soil, leaving in their wake ugly channels. Some drainage can include soil additives, or adding a slope to a flat lawn and French drains.

One yard drainage solution involves improving the soil. Clay soils are unable to absorb water very well. So adding organic matter such as compost, humus, or chemicals like lime or gypsum will help to break up the soil and improve the drainage. Sandy soils tend to lack in cohesion and will frequently wash away in heavy rains.

Compost and humus can be introduced to the soil to improve its ability to hold water. All of these products are sold in local garden centers. Treating drainage issues by improving the soil can take months of continuous applications, but can often resolve numerous small drainage issues.

Larger drainage issues on flat lawns can be addressed by changing the slope or grade. Slopes are defined as the incline of a garden. And a flat yard that has no slope will encourage water to pool as it has no way to run off the property.
